Mark Twain uses satire to portray the King and Duke as comical characters in The Adventures of Huckleberry, but their funny moments can be overshadowed by their immoral tendencies to use their made up personalities to get what they want. Huck notices this in later chapters and starts to show a disliking toward them. While watching them pretend to be the Wilkinson's relatives, he says that he was so disgusted it made him lose faith in humanity. When the King and Duke. He finds it awful that they would try so hard to get money that does not belong to them, which also shows Huck as a more morally correct person. When the King and Duke perform a show at the circus, they expect to be treated with respect, but they are instead met with the rude remarks of an upset audience. These situations show that the men are somewhat ridiculous, but also exposes them as the con-men they really are.
